Seeing Through Maps |
|
This NEW book explains the principles behind the Peters Projection and a
dozen other unique maps and provocative images. Its got over 70
illustrations: Van Sant, Fuller Dymaxion, a Toronto-centered equidistant map
of the world, even Minard's map of Napoleon's march on Moscow, and routes of
African Slave Trading (Petit's African Diaspora map). We've reproduced a redrawing of
Mercator's original world map (unavailable
since the 1950's) and have the first authorized publication of the original
McArthur Universal Corrective map of the world. It a book designed to reveal
the "hidden agendas" of maps.
BUT its a book about far more than cartography -- it shows how we can understand the world, and each other, much more fully if we're willing to see things from a number of DIFFERENT perspectives. Map projections are used as a metaphor for seeing the world from different points of view (other countries, other cultures, other peoples and other times). Overview of the Peters Map |
